Where is the Liverpool tax office?

Widows get no tax rebates?

  • I was out of work for 2 periods during the past 5 years, and I rang my local tax office (York) to ask for an appointment to bring my docs in - last time I applied for a rebate I sent them in the post, and when I rang to ask about progress I was told "Oh, we lost those!" I seem to have 2 tax offices - 1 in Liverpool, 1 in York (where I live) Having had my docs lost by the Liverpool office, resulting in my having to do a lot of work to replace them all, I thought this time I'd take them into the York office and get them to write to the Liverpool office to say they'd seen them. (A friend did this with theirs and it all went smoothly). I have been in receipt of an occupational widow's pension for many years - that's taxed in Liverpool. I've also worked for a couple of different businesses over the years - one of them apparently taxed by Liverpool, the other by York. (still with me?? It's complicated . . . ) Well, as I say I rang the York office (not easy in itself . . .) and the guy I spoke to asked why I wanted an appointment. I told him and he told me he was looking at me details on the computer, then told me: "You don't qualify for a tax rebate because you're in receipt of a widow's pension!!!" I asked him why, and he told me that any tax I overpaid would be adjusted in the tax I pay on my widow's pension. I don't accept this; each of my sources of income is taxed separately, at base rate (I've never earned huge amounts). When I left each of my jobs, there was NO adjustment to the tax on my widow's pension. Please does anyone know anything about this? I'm stuck to know what to do next, as I really need that appointment at my local office, but I just can't seem to get past this guy on the phone. Any advice would be welcome. Many thanks.

  • Answer:

Any tax adjustment will be made by way of an amendment to your code number, which affects the tax deducted from your widows pension, so nothing needs to be done. BUT, once this adjustment is entered on your code it won't get removed (because HMRC are too lazy to unnecessarily update annual information) so you'll end up paying more tax than is due. The only way to overcome this is to INSIST that HMRC issue tax calcs for the last few years.
