How to find out if I have the correct tax code?

  • Im not sure if i have the correct tax code at the moment (&&I dont really understand the codes and I have looked online and just feel really lost! Could someone explain it to me - simply =p) My tax was really high this month.. 1/4 of my wages, is this normal? I am 22 and live with my mom I am no longer in education.. and I am only working one job.. My current tax code is 0T Cant think of anything else that might affect it.. Thank you for any help!! ^.^

    Code 0T - you are getting precisely no allowances. You should have received a notice of coding to go with the new code. Phone HMRC - have your pay slip in your hand for references. They will want your address (because the notice of coding didn't reach you) and recent employment. Why you have this code I have no idea (unless you have the same initial and surname as your mother).

Tell us what you are earning and what the deductions are. Not info info. Far too much tax. Contact your payroll if you have one or HMRC. It might settle down next month. You have a tax allowance of £7475 a year and pay 20% tax over that.
