How do I know I am on the right tax code?

How to change my tax code from BR to 647L?

  • Hi guys, I worked for 5months in a restaurant and my tax code was 647L. I changed job, I gave my P45 to my manager, but he did not send my details to the tax centre, so are 3 months that I have BR code (emergency tax code). Now I would like to know how can I do to change my tax code and to get the right one? Must I go to the tax centre with my P45 or is my manger that to have to contact the tax office? Furthermore to get back my money what I need is P45 and P60, isn't it? Thanks a lot

  • Answer:

The new tax coding for this year is £7475, this is what you will given as BR which is Basic rate. Your manager needs to contact HMRC or your payrol department.

You can call the tax office, but really your employer should be on the case. If you are due any kind of tax rebate as a result of being on emergency tax, you will get that back via your new tax code. You're not likely to get a cheque (they rarely do that anymore).

Your employer is entirelly at fault. I suspect you have a criminal as an employer. Phone HMRC - if your record does not show your current employer then HMRC can sort out.
