Tax refund for 5 month working in london as sales assistant?
-
I would like to know if someone can help me about my problems with tax refund. I am Italian and I've started working as a sales assistant on 1st February 2011 and I will quit my job at the end of June and I will come back to Italy as well. I know that I can ask for a total refund for the taxes that I have payed, but in HMRC web site for me it is quite difficult to understand. My questions are as follows: 1) today May 24, at least can I ask for tax refund for the months February and March of the fiscal year 2010/2011, or it is better waiting the end of june and ask for the months all togheter? Do you know if I can do it online? I suppose that I need the P60, but my employes didn't gave me yet, i suppose they will agve me when I will quit the 30th june... 2) For the remaining months of April, May, June I know that I have to ask to my employer the P45, P60 and P85 to fill out by myself. Then what shall I do? I send to HMRC office that is written on my payrolls? Do you know how long it takes to have a refound? I ask to someone else to help me to do it for me, but they ask me 12,5% of fees on my refund to do it.... Thank you very much for your help and sorry again for disturbing you. 10 points to the better answer!

Answer:
The tax year in the UK is April 1st - March 31st, so you'll have to take each year separately So for the year 2010-2011, you will get a refund if you earned less than £6475 for that full year and paid tax For this tax year 2011-2012, you will have to tell them once you have left, or about to leave but you will need your P.60 from 2010-2011, as proff of what tax you paid last year If everything is straightforward and you give them all the information they need, a tax rebate can be as quick as four weeks, just make sure you have all the inforamtion they need which will come from your P.60 and your past wage slips

The tax year starts on 6th April. So last year - HMRC might have the final figure, then again might not. Best to wait until you get your P60 then (make and keep a copy) write to HMRC with the P60 and say what you was doing before the job and ask to have the year reviewed. When you leave the job you will be given a P45 by your employer. Write to HMRC and say you are leaving the country and would like this year reviewed. They may send you a form. Please ensure you include your National Insurance Nmber, name, date of birth and adress every time you contact HMRC.
