Like any profession, you will earn what you are worth. You will need a good degree, preferably in law (but essential). Once you have a degree you approach as many firms as you can to see if they will take you. Your employer will guide you through the Law Society exams in order to become qualified. And in the UK, "lawyers" prefer to be called solicitors.
