Making money with my website?

Would a money-making website have to register as a company and pay taxes?

  • I am making a website similar to a City portal. This will generate revenue by selling discount vouchers for restaurants/bars as well as from advertising. It will be focused on a city that is not in my current country of residence. Would I have to register this website as a company? Would I have to then pay taxes on my profits? If yes, which country should the website be registered (country of residence or country of registration?) Thanks

  • Answer:

You would initially have to register for Self Assessment in the UK. It is an interesting question as to jurisdiction - the internet is very unclear. I would urge you to register for Self Assessment anyway (you will pay taxes on your personal earnings. If you create a company (not necessary) then jurisdiction will have to be sorted out.

You're living in the UK. UK tax/NI contributions would be relevant. Don't put it off. Contact HMRC.
