Can I claim a tax rebate?

Can I claim a tax rebate if I leave full time work to go to uni?

  • I am planning on leaving my full time job in Sep to go to Uni. I am 22.Will I be able to claim a tax rebate? I may get a part time job but I am going to wait and see what the studying is like before I jump too far into anything..... thanks

  • Answer:

Depends on your future employment plans. If you get another job, provided there is less than a ten week gap between employment, new employer can make refund if you give him form P45. If there will be more than that, when you start new job ask new tax office to confirm to new employer he can make refund. If you will have no employment in the foreseeable future, you can complete form P50 after a month. Download from http://www.hmrc.gov.uk (put "form P50" in search-box), complete, and send to tax office with form P45.

If you are going to take on part time work, you cannot claim a tax refund. You will give your P45 to your new employer who will make your refund.

You might be able to take the American Opportunity Credit, the Hope Credit, or the Lifetime Learning Credit. These credits are all calculated based on the amount of qualified educational expenses you have. You can go to the link below for a detailed explanation of all three credits. Good luck!

You’ll be able to claim at the end of the tax year April 2011 if you’ve overpaid.
