Do i have to pay council tax?

Am I liable to pay Council tax on a whole property If I am the only non student?

  • I've never dealt with council tax before. Basically, I live with students however I myself am not having dropped out of university. As the only none student does this make me liable for everyone council tax and therefore a large amount of money? Would claiming council tax benefits only contribute to my portion of the rent? And would this exempt me from being forced to pay council tax for five other people?

  • Answer:

Hi Jim. It's generally accepted now that Mrs. Thatcher was right to go for a poll tax whereby everyone paid their share. But the dregs kicked up and the burden fell on householders. After all if one of your students was walking down the road and he burst into flames, the fire brigade would turn up and put him out. Then who ends up paying for the fire service, not your student or any or any other of the dregs. It's down to the responsible members of society ( again ). Everyone who benefits from local government services should be made to pay their fare share. BB.

The person at the top or nearest to the top of the following list has to pay the bill: • lives in the property and owns it • lives in the property and has a lease (this includes 'assured tenants' under the Housing Act 1988) • lives in the property and is a 'statutory' or 'secure' tenant • lives in the property and isn't a tenant but has permission to live there • lives in the property (for example a squatter) • has a lease of six months or more on the property, but doesn't live there • owns the property but doesn't live there You fall in the second cat, so you should have to pay, how much, it depends on the house/apartment's estimated value

You will have to pay council tax on the property. How much discount you get however, I can't tell you. It may be you will get the single person's discount which is 25% (not 50% as someone above me thinks - I know because I get it). Check the link below or call the council who will help you. Council tax and rent are completely separate things. Your council tax payments or deductions should have no effect on your rent.

The tax is paid on the property - not on the individual. If you are in full time work then yes, you are liable to pay the tax. If you are not and are on Jobseekers Allowance then no, you do not have to pay it
