I'm on emergency tax and no one seems to know what to do about it ><?

This has been on ongoing problem for a few months now. My new employer did a p46 when i started here, expecting to get my p45 when it was posted to me, and so i'm on emergency tax code 747L. But my P45 never arrived, my old employer says it must have got lost in the post, and that i need to fill in a p46 with my new employer. My new employer says thats a lie and my old employer needs to give me a new P45. My old employer says thats rubbish and my new employer needs to give me a p46. My new employer says thats rubbish as i already did a p46, and my old employer needs to give me a new P45. I'm so confused. Research i've done seems to point towards needing a p46, but since i already did this and it put me on emergency tax, i can only assume my new boss did it wrong. She won't budge on the idea that i need a p45 though, and just says i need to sort it out with my old employer. Help?

Answer:
747L is not an emergency code. That is a normal tax code. You have a tax allowance of £7475 a year. (that is the coding) you do not have to do anything you are being taxed correctly.

"A few months" - and you are on code 747L. Well 747L is not an emergency code, it it the standard code for many people as it is the standard personal allowance. Your last employer should have given you a P45 yes but when did you start your current job? If it was before 6th April then your current employer is operating the standard cumulative code.

That isn't an 'emergency' tax code. A P46 takes the place of a P45.

first things first your tax code is 747L so you'll earn 7470 pounds before you get taxed, your new employer is right your old employer should of gave you your p45, but you should be able to work out what you earned in the previous tax year with your p60 (a p60 will tell you how much tax you paid last year too) and you should have your previous tax code on an old pay sip, i payed emergency tax for the first 6 months in my first job, but it shouldn't be too long before its come to somewhat normal AND on the plus side you may end up with a large rebate next year :) i hope this helps a little.

i fear your new employer is getting confused. You need to fill in a p46 form and then you will recieve a new code. Also, if your old employer could give you a new p45 or if you have a p60. That can be used both are just either being really thick or really trying to cause problems.
