What is comparable pay?

Now im 18 what do i have to pay for? Do i have to pay rent?

  • I've been offered a job as a full time trainee dental nurse. I only turnt 18 in may. My earnings are going to be about 900 a month as i'm training however, i've been told i have to pay rent to the council. We are living in a hyde property and they want me to pay 47pounds a WEEK and then 8pounds council tax. I know i have to pay council tax but do i have to pay rent even though i'm not down as the main tenant my mum is. I was going to pay my mum 200 a month to help towards things like sky and food but i wont be able to pay her and another 188 a month. I dont understand why i have to pay went when i never signed anything saying i'd pay it. I don't know of anyone else that has to do this, they just pay rent to their parents. Help me udnerstand all this please??

  • Answer:

What is confusing here is that you think paying for Sky is more important than paying rent. If you don't think you should pay rent, who on earth do you think should pay it for you? The 200 per month you give your mum will just about cover the food and other household items you consume. You are now a big girl in the big world. Accept that you will have to pay your way.

If your mum is in receipt of housing benefit and you start work, your earnings are taken into consideration. You can apply for housing and council tax benefit. Phone your council and have them explain it to you............

Who has told you this first of all? And how do the council know? I got my first full time job at 18 for roughly the same money and I only ever paid my mum rent I have never paid nothing to the council I'm not on the rent book so I don't know how you've done unless you or your Mum have told the council that you've started full time work idk, Me and my mum never mentioned anything so if you have mentioned it then thats a bad thing to do really. it varies from council to council.my local council says you dont have to pay rent until ur 25 (if living at home) but you do have to pay coucil tax. it also depends what if any housing benefits your mum gets. you have to pay cos ur an adult its what adults do. andyway ud still have £500ish per month

What is a hyed property. I googled it but can't find any information. Is this a form of scoial housing? Anyway - after these expenses you still have over £400 a month to play with after your rent bills and food are paid. Really, this is plenty of money.

Your income (therefore contribution to the household) is taken into consideration when any housing or other benefits your mother claims are calculated.

Welcome to the world.

get a flat of your own

Who is asking for this money? The truth is that you have no right to lve at home, and should be paying your fair share. It costs more than you think to live! How many adults live at home? You could simply divide all bills (gas, electricity, phone, tv license, insurance, council tax, rent, food etc) by the number of people. Depends on the terms of your lease, then. They seem to be charging per person rather that a flat rate.
