Answer:
If you have an underpayment for a previous year, tax office can only take proportion of underpayment equivalent to this year's tax bill. I therefore suspect you have benefits (company car?) in employment. There is no secret number to call, local tax offices no longer take telephone calls, and you will only get answered by a call centre. The answer is probably on your form P2 (notice of coding) If you want a quick answer from HMRC, it may be beneficial to call in at a tax enquiry centre, Take your National Insurance number, relevant payslips, and two pieces of identification. Make an appointment before you go.

Go to the county clerk, they have a big insite to the taxes and might be able to clear it up. If not they would know whom to call.

It appears you have underpaid tax so far this year and this is now being recovered. You probably have a K code which limits the amount that can be reclaimed in any month to 50% of the gross pay. You should have been sent a copy of the code number giving details of how it was calculated. Try to find this and check the figures. Come back if there are any other queries. You can ask for another copy but, as you have found out, that is not always easy.

It would help if we knew what code number you were now on and whether you have had a notice of coding and what it says.

Details and context, what was your tax code, what is your tax code, have you received a code notification and have your circumstances changed?
