What do accountants do?
-
I'm in the process of looking for a new career. I really enjoy maths so I was thinking about becoming an accountant but unsure what the job really involves. Would be good if I can hear from actual accountants to let me know pros/cons of the job. Cheers

Answer:
Don't do it! I am an Accountant and hate it. True it can be interesting if you get the top jobs and are involved in management decision making. But the work of ordinary accountants is boring. Your maths will not really help. CIMA may be more relevant here in that there is some maths as part of the syllabus but most of the other big accountancy bodies don't have business maths as part of their curriculum. The exams are quite tough. Most of the years in accountancy have involved inputting journals into a computer system. Producing reports. You are basically a glorified bookkeeper! I am sure other accountants will not agree with me. True you can get lucky and get a good job and feel very much part of the business but most of the time your work as an accountant is not appreciated. You are regarded as an overhead cost! It is the people who bring in the business for the companies who are well regarded.

I agree with "Peace" in certain respects. Although you are just a cog in an organisation, no matter where you are in Accounts, you are part of the people who are actually keeping the businesses finances in check! Depending on what your role will entail will obviously depend on effort, luck and timing, but one thing is assured... Businesses will always require Accountants! The money and prestige can be good, although job satisfaction (unless you really want to be in it) can be some of the lowest on the market. Most of all roles undertake the process of moving "money" from one part of the business to another, whether that be cash receipts or transferring costs between departments. And maths only really helps if you become something along the lines of a Project or Management Accountant, where you are analysing figures more than processing them.
