I am 19 and working two part-time jobs in the UK. How can I find out if I should be paying tax?
-
And also, where can I go to find help with this? Would the JobCentre be able to help me or would I have to go to somewhere else?

Answer:
What emma b put about you work less than 16 hours week you will not have to pay tax, ive never herd so much Crap in my life if you are going to comment then get it right, i depends how much you get an hour. £139.00 aweek 2011-2012 before you pay NIC this is known as the primary threshold, however as long as you eran more than £102.00 aweek 2011-2012 you can still build up your entitlement to a state pension, as for you tax you can earn 7475 a year befor you pay any tax when you get your P60 at the end of the year and you have not earned that much but you have paid tax then you will get a rebate.

You should be paying tax on both jobs. Normally the way it works is that you are taxed at a normal rate for your 1st job then you are on 'emergency' tax for your second job as it is considered an extra income or something like that. I think also that if you work less than 16hrs per week you don't have to pay tax. Have a look around this site and see if it helps. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/calcs/paye.htm Good luck!

contact the tax office by website. Or you can google.

The hours you do have NOTHING to do with tax. You could be working 2 hours but be paid £300 an hour!!! Income tax paid is top do with earnings NOT hours and the 16 hour rule is to do with JSA NOT tax. FFS, Please don't rely on yahoo! Call HMRC. You should be paying tax on the 2nd job from my understanding. You need to call HMRC and speak with them about this NOT yahoo!
What's the point?
Most people have a personal tax free allowance of £7475 per year. If you earn less than that amount in total from all your jobs you do not pay tax. The number of hours you work and how many jobs you have makes no difference. It's the total amount you earn that matters. If you are overcharged tax then you can claim it back at the end of the tax year by sending your P60 to the tax office. Your employer will give you the address.

Your employer should ask you for form P45 when you start work. If you don't have one because ths is your first job or because you have a first job and the new one is to be your second job, then you should complete form P60 when you start work (agan this is for your employer to arrange). Then the HMRC office sends your employer a tax code which they must use to work out your tax payment. So you ought to be able to ask your employer to explain this. If your employer is not doing any of this you really must tell HMRC - it is against the law for them to behave this way. You don't have to tell your boss you did this and HMRC really should not drop your name to them either.
