How does an Australian Citizen who has returned home after a working holiday in the UK claim tax back?
-
I was on a working holiday maker visa in the UK during the tax year April 08/April 09 and left the UK to return home on February 19th 2009 (I am an Australian citizen). I am trying to work out how I can claim back the tax I paid whilst working in the UK during this time. Is it at all possible to claim back Tax although I have already left the UK? If so, how would I do this as an individual without having to go through a tax claiming service? Thank you!

Answer:
Steve is almost right. You can download the form P85 frm www.hmrc.gov.uk - no need to ring anywhere. You send it with your P45 which you should have received when you left your job to your tax office in the UK. You wont get a P60 if you wern't employed at 5/4/09. Please dnt use a tax reclaim servie, they are a rip-off and you can do it easily yourslef.

you need to contact your tax office in the UK, or any Contact Centre. you then need to request a form P85 - Leaving the UK - or down load one from the internet page of HMRC if its available then complete it, and send it, along with your P60 form to the tax office that deals with your ex-employer. on receipt by HMRC, a decision can then be made about your residency statusl (you will get your P60 form sometime in the next few weeks, as the year ends tomorrow. its the new tax year on monday 6th April) if you are due any refund of income tax overpaid, it can be made to you when those forms are reviewed.

In addition to what fengirl2 says, if you haven't already done so, you should also complete form P86 for when you came to the UK. That establishes your residency and entitlement to UK tax allowances. You should be OK as you are a British Commonwealth citizen. Any repayment has to be in Sterling, wherever you are, and you are responsible for any currency conversion costs.

Why should you get tax back for working over here ! The National Health, Hospitals, Police, Fire and Ambulance services were there at your beck and call IF you needed them - paid out of the tax on your wages ! Just because you didn't have to use any public services doesn't mean you can get away without contributing towards them ! If you don't like paying UK tax - don't work here ! AND - before you get any funny ideas - I've been self-employed for over twenty years - and I probably pay more tax in a month than you did in a year !

Wite to the Inland Revenue and they'll send the forms I think you can claim back VAT too but no receipts no refund .
