Report a person for not being registered as self employed, tax evasion?
-
In the UK it is that time of year again where those that are self employed have to fill out a tax return! nasty stuff. So it annoys when i know someone who is running a business but does not pay tax, and is not registered as self employed with HMRC and therefor doesn't have the mis fortune of tirelessly working out if you've made any money this year and if you have, how much goes to the taxman. My question is, how can i report said person anonymously (of course) and what could happen to them if i did report them?

Answer:
Look at the HMRC website http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/index.htm and you will find the tax evasion hotline 8.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Friday 8.00 am to 4.00 pm Saturday and Sunday Closed bank holidays 0800 788 887 The HMRC will investigate and if they are liable, they will be charged with evasion and could be prosecuted.

It is a fact of life that some people abide by the law and others don't. In some ways you could say it is up to the individual and his/her conscionce. You would have to 100% be certain that they don't pay tax when they are liable. Furthermore thye possibly will get caught one day anyway. Its up to you what you do, not us.

well if you are absolutely sure of your facts about this person. Then it is to the taxman you should go, they have an investigative department. If your info is correct it will involve serious investigation, which will result in a large bill for unpaid tax over however many years it could also lead to a prison stretch. So be very sure of your facts and that you want to do it. Someone did this to me a few years back all though there was no truth in it, I had to prove it and they go through everything what you spend on shopping, fuel, entertainment, bank accounts, mortgages everything it is very disruptive and stressful and can drag on for weeks. So are you sure you want to do this to someone, Ok if he is some super rich swindling millions and you can prove it yes go for it but then those are the ones who have some high powered lawyer who gets them out of it anyway. up to you
