How to claim back emergency tax paid without P45? (in UK)?

  • So I had a part-time student job which I left suddenly, and had ended up paying around £200 in emergency tax. For certain reasons I don't think I'll be able to get my P45 off the employer (at least not without a lot of hassle and messing about anyway) and was just wondering if you can still claim it back without this... and how? Don't answer if you're just going to tell me I should get the P45.

  • Answer:

You can get it back without the P45, it will just take longer. If you have the actual payslips, you can just take the cumulative figures of salary paid and tax deducted and from the last one to make the claim. If you don't have the payslips, in principle the repayment will still be made but it could take around a year after the end of the tax year - your salary and tax details will be submitted to HMRC after 5 April next, and oce it is processed by them you can get your repayment. Their processing may happen very quickly or it could take ages, entirely luck of the draw. There is no real way to speed it up so that your employer's details are processed faster, but you would just have to phone every couple of months and check whether it has been done. If there is any liklihood of you working again in another job before 5 April, make sure that they have the details from your P45 (effectively the stuff from your final payslip) and make sure you get HMRC to put you on a cumulative code (NOT a Month 1/Week 1 code, denoted as M1 or W1 on your coding notice) immediately you start work.
