Can I work full-time in the UK while doing my dissertation?

Work fulltime in the UK but receive a stipend from a friend, how does that work with the Tax Office?

  • Supposing I work as a fulltime permanent employee in the UK and I do a small job for a friend every now and then from which I receive a small stipend. How would I declare that to the tax office? Obviously I cannot register as being self-employed because I'm not. If anyone knows how I should proceed in such a circumstance, that would be great!

  • Answer:

If your friend pays you in cash, or by personal cheque, I wouldn't bother about it. If your friend is paying you through an actual payroll, you would need to notify this to your tax office (the same one that your employer uses) and ask their advice. If it is just a small amount, they might not even bother about it.

Other answers

It is not registering as "Self Employed" it is registering for "Self Assessment". You would submit a tax return with an employment page and the money from your friend on another page - why is your friend giving you this money? If it is for work then you are self employed.
