Is it a must to get a national insurance number in order to find a job in the United Kingdom?

(1) i want to find a waitress, or sales lady job (part time only, the wages i earn will not be high), i dont want to bother to do interview at job centre (government office) to get an national insurance number, is it a must to get that number? (2) if i dont have the number, is it illegal to work in the uk? (3) if i dont have the number, will any employer hire me? (4) what are the differences between having an national insurance number and without? (5) if i dont mind paying more tax and have no tax allowance, is it ok not to get a number? (5B) what is an emergency tax ? (6) someone told me if no number, the tax office would assume i have to pay tax even i only earn the minimum wage, is it correct? they say something like''''''''less than annual salary of 5000 pounds no need to pay tax..............--i have no clue about what it is. (7) if i tell the employer my wage is too low , so no need to pay tax, i should initially claim the overpaid tax to the tax office (cos my wage is too low and no need to pay tax , less than 5000 pounds) in next year???????? (8) what is tax allowance? (9) how much is it? (10) what authorities web site i can get the correct answer to all my questions? I asked different locals, all have different answers. I phoned the office for booking appointment to the Job centre for the national insurance number, the staff told me it is legal to work in the uk without an national insurance number, true? (11) what personal details would the job centre keep in their computer record ? is it confidential and would not give to other parties even other government departments? (12) if i am employed, my employer will give what kind of my personal details to the government departments and which departments? (13) if i apply for a job, does you employer have the right to have a photocopy of my passport? (14) Actually i know nothing the tax thing, system for an employee, please tell me everything about it. The above things i wrote here were all heard from some british locals and from my school staff, i dont know how truth it is and want to know the exact relationship about -- if one works in this country, what he must do to the tax department, and what is the tax percentage and if not do, what happen? (15) please answer point by point here to make me easier to understand since i am not a native english speaker. (16) I am not a british citizen, but i am an EU citizen, is there any differences in about the tax issue and national insurance number issue? (17) if i have to pay tax, should i need to fill in tax return form or the employer will do it for me and deduct a certain percentage of money from my salary to the tax office? (18) if yes, how much is the percentage?

To carry on from the previous answere: 13. Your employer does not have the right to photocopy your passport - he should just make a note of the details on it. He is required to do this under the Asylum and Immigration Act 1998. 14. It is 100% the employer's reposnsibility to deduct tax and NIC from all his employee's pay and to send the deductions to HMRC. As previous answerer has sais, the basic rate of tax is 20%, after the tax free allowance of £6035pa. 15. Think we have done that! 16. EU citizens are treated the same as UK citizens for tax and NI. 17. You dont fill in a tax return, as stated above, your employer makes the deductions. You do need to complete a form P86 however. 18. See above. 19. A Ni number ensures that the NIC's deducted by your employer go into your account and not the account of someone with the same name.

1/ I don't have time to write a book, but here are some brief answers. It is best to have a national insurance number. You can get a temporary one. 2/ no its not illegal but it causes problems 3/Yes, he can obtain a temporary one 4/ You need the number for various claims. As I have always had one I am not sure of the downside. 5/ You won't need the number to get a tax allowance. They put you on emergency code [ this is the same as a normal code but is on a week by week basis not cumulative. 6/ The first £500 a month you earn is tax free, then you pay at 20% 7/ Your employer has to obey the rules. You should have no trouble. 8/ £6035 for the year to 5th April 2009. Ie £500 a month as I said in 6 9/ That is what you can earn in a year before you pay tax. 10/ www.direct.gov.uk will tell you everything. What they told you is true. 11/ They only keep basic details like date of birth & your employment record. You have to assume that other government departments can access it.'Big Brother' watches everyone in the UK. 12/ Only details of earnings. 13/ I have never met this problem as I live here. BUT An employer can be fined heavily if they employ an illegal immigrant so they need to be sure that you are from the EU. Have run out of space for reply. I hope this helps.

even british citizens need a national insurance number to work these days,thetax % depends on personal circumstances,your employer would be in big trouble if he employed you without a national insurance number,he would be fined thousands of pounds
