No - and the high street shop will not touch it. It must be paid into your bank account. If you do not have a bank account you must find a person or organisation that will accept the cheque and then give you the money. If you do not have a bank account you have to return the cheque to HMRC, give all the usual identifiers, state you do not have a bank account and then ask for a new cheque payable to a "nominee" - the nominee needs to be identified clearly (address as well please) so that the payment can be traced.

HMRC only issue crossed cheques, so they have to be paid into a bank account in your name (and therefore go though the clearing system). The alternative is to elect for HMRC to pay you direct into your bank account. I've provided you with a link to the over payments page at HMRC (you can look down the list to find the reason that matches your situation).

No, needs to be paid into a bank account. If you don't have a bank account, HMRC may send the payment to a nominee.
