Should you get taxed if you are a full time student?

(UK RESIDENTS ONLY PLEASE)Will I still get taxed if I drop out of college and I am 17 years old?

  • Okay, I've heard a lot of things about the whole taxing situation. I am 17 years old and I got my first job on the 10th December 2011. I filled out a P46 form and I think I stated that I was a full time student. BUT, due to personal reasons I might be withdrawn from college so if I continue working I won't be taxed because apparently full time students do not get taxed but I'm sure that I'll be out of college. What do I do? :'( I really don't know what to do! I'm totally confused. Also, I heard another thing that if your under the age of 18 you do not get taxed. The type of work I do is shift work so its whatever shift is available for me to work, I do. Please, someone help me on this.

  • Answer:

Student or a baby - you are still liable for tax the same as anyone else. There is no difference in the eyes of HMRC. The P46 has three boxes - A = first job this tax year AND I have not claimed benefit B = this is my main job but there might have been other stuff C = this is not my main income A gets code 747L cumulative - all allowances from 6th April Available, B gets code 747L X - one twelfth of the allowances per month and C gets code BR pay 20% tax. College has no affec at all - but in my personal opinion dropping out is bloody stupid. I did and I have a crap job.

Everyone gets taxed if they earn enough students are not exempt and neither are young people if you earn more than £143 a week you pay tax, no matter whether you are under 18 , a student, or none of these

I can't say I'm 100% right. However, based on the other teens at the apprenticeship that I'm doing, you shouldn't get taxed. There are mainly 17/18 year old teens there. They're not students anymore, but don't get taxed. I'm 18 myself, and I don't get taxed yet.
