I'm a US citizen living in the UK, if I purchase items online from US retailers do I need to pay VAT?
-
I'm living in the UK temporarily. Everything is twice the cost over here and there are some perosnal items I need and want to purchase from back home. If I order them online am I subject to paying VAT on them? Is there a way to get it back at the end of my stay?

Answer:
Yes in theory, goods imported are subject to vat and duty from the USA. These amounts are not charged if the value is no more than (£35 or thereabouts) Quite often the Post Office - acting as agents for the government do not raise any charges at all!

Pay VAT? Probably. Get it back Probably not. Depending on where you are, you could see if one of the military chaps might not get it for you from BX.
