What are the council tax rates in Edinburgh, Scotland?

Does commercial council tax rates vary by London Borough?

  • Our business is currently in Kensington & Chelsea, which has very high Council Tax Rates for Businesses. Does this rate vary by London Borough and are there some London Boroughs which are better for lower Rates?

  • Answer:

Yes Guido, council tax rates vary tremendously by Borough. At the moment your business is situated in Kensington & Chelsea where rich people live, so you will be able to make more profits when you sell your stuff in your shop and consequently your local council will want more rates from you. If you open a business in some lousy place like Tower Hamlets or Brixton you will pay a lot less in council tax. But don't forget that even if you save council tax in places like that, you will end up losing more because your shop will probably be broken into more frequently and you will not be able to sell expensive items there and also you will suffer from a lot of shop lifting. In life the more you pay, the better the service you get - unless you own a business in Kensington & Chelsea (where you will just get ripped off by your local council who are just plain greedy for more money).

Yes, Council tax rates vary depending on the borough and those rates change every year. So unless you are quite happy to secure a new premises every April, then you will have to pick an area and stay there.

The Business Rate is set by the Government and so is the same through out the country. The amount you pay is the Business Rate multiplied by the Rateable Value. The RV is represents the yearly rent the property could have been let for on the open market on a particular date. For the revaluation that came into effect on 1st April 2010, this date was set as 1st April 2008. So the amount you pay will vary by street, but not necessarily by Borough.

Yes they do as it does with private property and changes every tax year.
