Can I cash my cheque in the post office?

Can I cash a cheque that's in my name from the tax office at the post office?

  • I was sent a tax rebate but I can't afford for the money to go straight into my account, can I cash the check I'm entitled to at the post office as both hm revenues and the post office are both government. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks guys and girlies, peace

    Various "we cash cheques" shops. moneylenders or pawn shops will probably cash it for you, but they will charge a fee. If you have friend you trust, you can send the cheque back to HMRC with a covering letter asking them to make it payable to your friend. That, however, will take a few weeks to sort out. Petrusclavus: He probably can't pay it into his own account because he is overdrawn and won't be able to get the money out if he pays it in. Not that it should have any bearing on your answer, or is that really how current HMRC employees deal with the public these days? Actually, you don't have to answer that - we all know the answer.

No, if you cannot afford to put it in your account most banks will cash tax refund checks as long as verified. You can take it to a check cashing place or a bank but keep in mind that they charge 10 dollar or 2 percent at most places. If you are near a wal mart they only charge 3 to 6 bucks.

Why can you not pay it into your own account? How can it cost you money to put money into your account? The cheque has your name on it and is crossed a.c. payee only - so no legitimate operation will touch it unless it is to pay it into your account. Tell me why you cannot pay it into your account and I'll tell you how to have it paid to someone else.

If you're in the UK it's a cheque, not a check. You cannot cash cheques, but you can pay them in atr a bank. Post Offices accept cheques for most banks but not all. To pay it in at the Post Office you'll need to take your paying in book.
