Can i claim my petrol back on my own?

Can i claim petrol/mileage back in tax & if so how? (UK)?

  • I work for the NHS and a main part of my job is driving. I am insured and registered for driving at work. However, in the infinite wisdom of cutbacks i am limited to 3500 miles per year which i exceeded a long time ago. (I easily do 500-800 miles per month!) My petrol allowance up until 3500 miles was approx 47 pence per mile. It dropped to approx 20 pence per mile after the 3500 miles was exceeded. (The NHS trust i work for then trys to push you into hiring a lease car from them which is not a viable option on my wage, for personal use or how often it needs to be used/not used etc...) I have looked on a tax website and i'm still unsure if i am entitled to claim the difference between what the trust pays & what the government says should be paid by an employer. Could someone please advise. Thanks :-)

  • Answer:

Try looking at www.hmrc.gov.uk and check for expenses etc. There should be a guide for this and other expenses connected with work. Failing this speak to HM customs and excise direct, or visit them.

Try to keep a diary of mileage, where from and where to. Write to HMRC (address from direct.gov.uk) and ask - they will probably send you a form to fill in. Mileage is complex and always handled by a technician as there are many variables, but no harm in asking.
