How much holiday I am entitled too from the place that I work?

The Holiday Year Starts January 1st, and end's on December the 31st. I have so far been working since last may (2006), and as the holiday year is from jan-dec, i take it, any holiday built up between may-dec of last year has been lost, as another year has started again. correct? Ok, second question. According to what I have found, you are entitled to 4 weeks (20 days) paid holiday per year, depending on what my contract states, depends on when i can take this i guess, but, bank holiday's are not included in this... so if their are 9 bank holiday's, then im assuming that i am then entitled to 11 paid days off from work.. ?

Normally if you haven't worked for the whole 12 month period to gain the 20 days, you would have been entitled to 1.67 days per calendar month worked. Therefore in 2006 you should have been entitled to 8 (completed months) x 1.67 = 13.36 days paid holiday. It should be in your contract as to whether any of this could have been carried over, and sometimes if you are unable to take your leave then a special arrangement can be agreed. But I would think by now you are out of time on this one. So, this year you are entitled to the full 20 days holiday . Check your contract, if it doesn't say specifically then ask your line manager or Personnel officer as to whether Bank Holidays are included or excluded from your annual holiday entitlement. You need to have this clarified as soon as posssible and you are entitled to this information. It is possible for your employer to set terms as to when holiday may or may not be taken, again this should be specified in your contract of employment, which you agreed to when you signed it. Ensure that you don't lose out this time and either book time off or ask if some can be carried over as you cannot fit in taking all the time owed to you due to their holiday policy. You certainly must be an exceptional employee if you have worked willingly all this time without taking a break. Good luck and happy holidays!

If you are in the UK then you are entitled to 4 weeks (20 days) paid holiday per year. This may not be full dates depending on your contracted hours. If you work a full time 40 hour week (contracted) then you are entitled to 4 x 40 hours per year. If you work say 16 hours a week (contracted) then you are entitled to 4 x 16 hours. Even if you work 1 hour a wee (contracted) then you are entitled to 4 x 1 hours a year, and so on. Overtime does not always count. Bank holidays can be deducted. Your employer can dictate when you take half of your holiday. Everyone working in the UK is entitled to holiday pay even temps. Many Recruitment Agencies do have a 13 week qualifying period before you can start to ecru holiday pay. Most contracts do state that if you do not use your holiday by the end of the year then you lose it. It is worth checking your contract though as some do allow you to carry it over. Agency workers: it is worth noting temporary workers usually have their holiday paid with their wages each week/month or it is shown on your wage slip as held in a separate account and you will have to request payment. IT IS UK LAW THAT ALL WORKERS AGED OVER 16 MUST BE PAID FOR A MINIMUM 20 DAYS HOLIDAY PER YEAR.

You should have been told this when you were offered the job you know. I can't believe you haven't taken a day off since last May, I would love to have an employee like you! Your safest bet is to go ask your line manager or have a look at the terms and conditions of your job, it will probably be 20 days per year if you work full time, plus the usual bank holidays, christmas etc. Good luck and don't be scared to ask for time off - it's your right!

To answer your first question, you're right that you've lost any holidays from last year unless your manager authorises those to be carried over to this year. With regards to your second question, bank holidays are statutory holidays and are on top of your normal holidays so you will still have 20 days holiday including and then 8 bank holidays on top. This would only be different if you're a temporary worker or on a part time contract. Hope this helps!

Unless your contract states differently, you are entitled to 20 days paid holiday, which includes bank holidays unless you are required to work on the bank holidays. So if you have had all bank holidays so far this year off and been paid for it, you would have taken 6 days for that, plus need 2 for December, so 8 days of bank holidays (not sure where you got 9 from?). So that leaves you 12 days paid holiday to take another time. Again unless specified differently in your contract, unused holiday can not be carried over to the next year. However, the law is changing and from October you will be entitled to an extra 4 days paid holiday to partially cover bank holidays, so will be able to use those days as paid days off too between October and end of December, and next year will be 24 days holiday instead of 20. And to correct the answer above mine: Bank holidays are NOT statutory holidays (in the UK at least) and you are not entitled to take these days off on top of your allocated holiday entitlement, unless your contract specifically says so. Like I said the law is changing but at the moment this is the case. In 2009 bank holidays will be ON TOP of the 20 days but not yet.

No, you are intitled to 4 weeks to take off when ever you'd like. Bank holidays you get off anyway. The 4 weeks are your when-ever days. Lets say that you're here in the states, Monday is Labor day which is a federal holiday here, so it's just like your bank day. No matter what, I'm not working on Monday. That does not count agains my vacation days (your holiday days).

If you are oin the UK, you are entitled to 20 days paid holiday a year. These can include the bank holidays but it depends on yuor employer and your contract. ********* Why am I getting a thumbs down? Jace provides a good link which confirms what I have written - you get 20 days and your employer CAN include those in your entitlement. If yu are from a different country, the law may be different but please notice that this question was put in ENGLAND.

did you not take any days off between may and december 06? Surely your manager has a leave record for all staff? bank holidays are additional days off and should not be counted in your holiday entitlement, however, some firms will ask you to work on bank holidays and give you a day in leiu for it. If you haven't taken any leave so far this year, I reckon you have accrued around 15 days by now. Get the staff handbook out, to see if you lost your holidays from last year of if they are carried over, and ask your manager for a copy of your leave record.
