Do I have to file state taxes for two states this year?
-
I lived in Maryland all my life until mid-September of last year. I assume I have to do MD state taxes for 2011, but have I lived in NY long enough to have to file here too?
-
Answer:
where is your income your tax home is where you work unless it a short, temporary, less than a year's assignment if you are working in NY and this seems to be a permanent job you will file NY if you had any income in MD and retained such things as bank accounts, voter registration, vehicle registration, MD might still consider you are citizen but without income from MD there would be no reason to file

If you had earned income in these states you have to file in both states. It has nothing to do with how long you lived there.
