Send taxes by mail - mail box or post office?
-
I need to send my taxes by mail... can I just drop it in a mailbox or do I have to go to a post office?
-
Answer:
If you owe money, bring it to the Post Office or drop it in one of the Blue Collection Boxes. Do not leave it in your house mailbox for pickup... your letter carrier is not required to pick up your mail from your residence. Most tax returns are overweight or oversized, so make sure you have enough postage affixed if you drop it in a Collection Box. If you wait until April 15th, make sure you check the collection box pickup time. Although, nearly every piece of mail receives a cancelation date, sometimes a piece can slip by the machines causing your mail piece to remain undated. For proof of mailing, unless you actually witness the Postal Clerk date stamp your return, Certified mail is the way to go. You can also track your Certified in the Postal Service's website to see when it was delivered to the IRS.

I always recommend that anything that you send to the IRS be sent Certified Mail, Return Receipt Requested. That gives you proof of mailing and proof of receipt. That requires a trip to the Post Office. Additionally, most tax returns are too big or too heavy to send without extra postage. Unless you have a postal scale and rate chart handy, a trip to the Post Office would be advisable since the IRS will not accept postage-due mail.

With something as serious as your taxes, you should always go directly to the post office to mail and avoid that extra trip from the box with a stranger where anything can happen. Also you can make sure the postage is correct. I'm going through serious hassles with the IRS right now. Once they have their hooks in you, there are no rules for them. They can do whatever they want to you. If you get your taxes in on time, you stay under the radar. Don't get unnecessarily red-flagged by having your return come in late or not at all. Do NOT take chances with THE MAN.

You can throw them in the mail, just make sure the postage is correct. Figure 1 stamp for every 4 pages.

you certainly can mail at the post office, in your mail box for your local postal clerk to pick it up etc you also can send it by the postal services, UPS, etc and for your information certified mail is not a good idea, this only certifies that someone at the center signed for it, does not mean any assurance that the return actually got there, because no one knows(but you what was in the certified mail) if you want to be sure, include in your envelope a sase with the indication on the envelope that the person who opens your envelope signs it and attests that the return was in fact in the envelope

Mail box is fine BUT. With something as serious as taxes you probably should get proof you actually mailed it by using Return Receipt. Since you would need to go to the Post Office for this, why not just drop by the local IRS office and get them to date stamp a copy of the return and be sure that a) they get it and b) you have proof. Just cuz you are not paranoid, doesn't mean they ain't watching you.
