How do I flag my SSN?

I am married as of nov 2010. My w4 shows I'm single and wife doesn't have a SSN yet. How do I file tax ret ?

  • I found out MFJ gives $2.7k more refund than MFS in my case (turbotax & taxact). Spouse is on L2 so she is eligible to apply for SSN. Can I just request extension and file MFJ after she gets SSN? Can I NOT FILE till SSN gets in (3rd week of April?) PS:I do not want to amend if possible from IRS site : SSNs. Do not complete Form W-7 if you have an SSN or you are eligible to get an SSN. You are eligible for an SSN if you are a U.S. citizen or if you have been admitted by the United States for permanent residence or U.S. employment

  • Answer:

    1) Can I just request extension and file MFJ after she gets SSN? Yes, definitely. You'll have until 15 October to file, it's free. 2) Can I NOT FILE till SSN gets in (3rd week of April?) Correct, you can not. Must file MFS or MFJ - Both require Spouse ID. 3) I do not want to amend Wise choice. But don't be surprised if your return takes a long time to be accepted - SS info must reach IRS. Suggest paper filing with a copy of wire's new SS info.
