When can I expect a direct deposit refund for old tax returns?

  • On September 9, 2009 I mailed my tax returns for 2006 and 2007 to the IRS. While I could not e-file these returns, I did opt for direct deposit for both of these 1040EZs. But I am curios when I might expect my tax returns for these years. Anyone know? Incidentally, I filed my 2008 tax return the same day, electronically, and received my direct deposit refund on September 18, 2009.

    Refunds for prior years are mailed out to you. the box for direct deposit is on the return for when filing timely. IRS does take 6-12 weeks to process prior year tax returns. So be patient, you did file late, and most of not needed the refund if you are just now filing. In about 4 weeks from Sept 9th you can contact IRS at 1-800-829-1954 to find out the status of your refund. IRS doesn't show status of refund on their website for prior tax returns. Good luck!

The IRS doesn't do direct deposit on prior year returns. Allow at least 6-8 weeks for those.

Processing of the old returns will probably take a couple months or more. Unfortunately, you'll get it when you get it.But you waited well over a year (over 2 for the 2006 return) to file them.

I'm not sure they will allow that. You may end up getting them in the mail. Either way, I would expect it to be closer to 8 weeks or more.

Probably won't. They will be mailed rather than DD. Only current year's refunds are generally DD. And e-filing is a much quicker process. Your older returns are paper returns and the processing of paper returns normally takes 4-12 weeks. It might take longer due to glut of amended returns, also paper returns, due to first time buyer's credit. What's the Rush when you waited SO long to fulfill your legal obligation to file???

Expect 12 weeks to process prior year returns. So DD or not won't make much difference.
