Most state tax income earned while you live or work in the state. If you live in one state and work in another, there is often a credit from your state of residence for taxes paid the the state you worked in. As I understand you question you lived and worked in Seattle form Jan to May, then moved to California. Any income before you moved would be taxed by Washington only. Income earned after you moved would be taxed by California and the state where you worked at the time if that is not California. You will have to file as a part year resident in both Washington and California. Your W-2(s) should indicate how much income was earned in each state. Update: I just found out WA does not have a state income tax. You don't have to file in WA.

No, that income isn't taxed by CA. Only the income you earned once you changed your domicile to CA is taxable by CA.
