IRS tax deductibility of SDI, State Disability Insurance, and VDI, Voluntary Disability Insurance?
-
Two questions: 1) Many companies require employees to pay State Disability Insurance, SDI, while other require Voluntary Disability Insurance, VDI. It appears that SDI payments are tax deductible on the Federal return but VDI are not. Why is this? 2) Are benefits paid under each of these plans taxable or non taxable? thanks

Answer:
as far as I know, neither SDI or VDI is tax deductible on federal return. Of course, I've also never dealt with either SDI or VDI, so I could be wrong on the deductibility. Ordinarily, disability income premiums are paid for with after tax dollars. This allows for your benefits to be received income tax free. In regards to group LTD, you might be able to pay your LTD premiums with after tax dollars. If so, you could receive the benefits income tax free

You can deduct certain mandatory contributions, as noted below. The fact that they are mandatory (by the state) is probably what makes them deductible as a tax. Contributions to state benefit funds. As an employee, you can deduct mandatory contributions to state benefit funds withheld from your wages that provide protection against loss of wages. Mandatory payments made to the following state benefit funds are deductible as state income taxes on Schedule A (Form 1040), line 5. California Nonoccupational Disability Benefit Fund. I am presuming you are a Californian like me. SDI is deductable as tax on federal returns because it is a collected tax. California does not allow this particular deduction. VDI is not a tax.
