When should i expect my tax refund?

My tax refund is being delayed because I didn't file in 2008. when should I expect it?

  • I never filed in 2008 because I barely worked and didn't think I had to that year. I requested a wages and earnings statement from the irs, and they are mailing it to me so I can file for that year. Does anyone know how long I can expect to wait before they process it and release my refund that I am owed for this year?

  • Answer:

Not until you file the missing return and it's been processed. The notice should include an address to send the return to. Generally that will expedite the processing of it. If you just sent it to the service center for your state it may be 8 to 12 weeks before it's processed if there's a refund involved and 4 to 6 months if it shows a balance due.

I believe for 2008 if you made less than 8500 and were single (no dependents/spouse) the you didn't have to file taxes. Did they tell you they were holding it due to the 2008 filing or are you assuming so. Usually your current return has nothing to do with whether you filed in the past, unless you owe some huge amount of money. In those cases that will just take what you owe from your current refund, but you should still get the remainder right away.
