Can you claim your internet service on your income taxes as an educational expense?

While the internet might have educational value, it is not a tuition expense. Don't try to claim it because no matter how you see it, the IRS still believes its a personal expense and will not allow the deduction.

No, internet access is not a deductible educational expense, even if it is required for the course.

Educational deductions are generally limited to TUITION. Anything else had to be a condition of enrollment and paid directly to the school. Most books, supplies, etc. don't qualify because they weren't required. In theory you could have gone to a library and accessed the internet from a public computer and not had a modem or even a computer at home.

If the Community College courses are directly related to your doing your job at work, there is a chance the internet service expense may be a deductible expense to the extent that it is used as an educational tool. If you use the internet for your entertainment six out of 10 hours, only 40% of the service cost would be deductible.
