What can I do on the last day of Kindergarten?

Can I claim full day Kindergarten tuition on taxes?

  • I was not aware that we could, but we got a form in the mail from the school thats titled, tax form. Its a public (but charter) school. half day kindergartemn was free, but we opt'd for full day which included a fee. When i was entering taxes on turbo tax lastnight it doesnt sound like we can claim this even though a tax form was sent. So I guess long story short, can we claim kindergarten fee's?

  • Answer:

When you claim preschool tuition on your taxes, it counts as a child care expense rather than as tuition-based education. According to Internal Revenue Service Publication 503, such tuition counts as a necessary expense if both parents (if filing jointly) must pay someone to care for their child while they work or look for a job. The IRS does not allow deduction for preschool when an at-home parent can care for the child. Up to 35 percent of the tuition can count toward the credit, as of 2010. I wish! My daughter is about to finish 8th grade. She's been in private school since Pre-k. At the end of the year, we would have already invested over $50k in her education!! I'd LOVE a tax break!
