Where should I sign the Income Tax Forms?

W-2 forms/Income tax help!!?

  • I worked 6 jobs last year. I had my full time job, my part time job, and 4 side jobs that i did on random weekends. I'm still waiting for 5 out of the 6 w-2 forms (i think they're called) before i can feel out my income tax information. Somebody yesterday told me that if i made less than 600 dollars (which i probably did in those jobs) then you would get a different form not a w-2....i think she said its called a 1099 form. but that person told me that if you're not a "normal" employee then you wouldn't receive anything and you would just put how much money you made from those jobs on a certain section on your income tax forms....does anybody know if this is true?! Am i waiting around for nothing?! Does this even make sense!? Thanks

  • Answer:

What you were told has some truth but also some mistakes. Getting a W-2 or a 1099 doesn't depend on how much you make, it depends on whether you are an employee or not. And employee has taxes taken out, at least for social security and medicare, and gets a W-2. And independent contractor is responsible for his own taxes, and gets a 1099. If you do work as a contractor, and make under $600, they aren't required to send you a 1099 - you are still required to report the income though, from your own records of what you were paid. If you were an employee in your part-time job but don't have your W-2 yet, give them a call and ask them what happened to it. The 1099 income will go on a schedule C or more likely C-EZ, and you'll need a schedule SE also, and will use a form 1040 not 1040A or 1040EZ.

As long as some of these jobs weren't under-the-table, you should recieve 1099 or w-2 for them all. Relax.

Only you would know if you were an employee or independent contractor.

You will still get W-2's for those jobs if you were an employee. The only way you would get 1099's is if you were considered an independent contractor. A 1099 will not be filed with the IRS if you made over $600.
