I paid the IRS online by accident thinking I was paying my state taxes. How do i ask for my money back?

So last year I had to pay state taxes and i decided to do it online. however when i did i ended up sending the money to the irs. I already payed my state tax but i want to know how do I go/what procedure to get my money back from the IRS. This was from last years taxes. I had called irs around september about the issue and i was told i would receive a check in the mail but i never receive my check .? any help please?
Answer:

keep inquiring with IRS about the over payment or possibly get a free transcript, for 4506T, this might give you some idea about the existence of the overpayment

Was this sent in as an estimated payment even though that's not what you meant to do? If so, show it on your 2011 return as an estimated payment, and if you don't owe that much, it will be refunded.
