If taxes were assessed (1 months worth) for a incorrect state, how should that be handled when paying the tax?
-
When my wife changed her name with the Army (she is a medical student in the Health Professionals Scholarship Program who gets a monthly stipend), they had her state of residence as Kansas for one month. We corrected the error, but when he W-2 came they still had Kansas listed in section 15. How should we handle any taxes owed?
-
Answer:
If her domicile isn't KS, she doesn't owe any KS taxes. Just file a KS non-resident return showing zero income and any taxes withheld. You'll get a refund of those taxes.
