How do you fill out a W-4 Tax forms for work if you'ree a minor?
-
I have a job Orientation tomorrow at Sears, I've never done taxes, never done any of that, but I know I will have to fill out Tax W-4's or whatever it is they require you to fill out. I don't want to look stupid and ask how to fill it out, what do minors have to fill out? Also I am 16, if that helps you.

Answer:
Congratulations on your first job! Look at the form. Claim "Single - 0." That means you're single, with no exemptions. They'll withhold the max, but it probably won't be a whole lot, unless you got a job with executive management. At Single 0, you should get a small refund.

Put S-2. A minimal amount of tax will be withheld on weeks you earn a lot (like maybe the summer) but you will either get it back, or only owe a few $. The rules for "exempt" are strict, but S-2 gives you wiggle room even if you make more than $5,850 [which is the standard deduction amount for 2012]. Owing the government a few $ ($1 - 600, depending on a person's income) is considered good tax planning. [Don't panic. The $600 relates to full time adult workers] - - but you owe the same, whether you pre-pay throughout the year, or post pay by April 15 of the next year. Good luck on your job.

Ask your parents if you will have $300 or more of investment income. If they say no, estimate how much income you will have by the end of the year. If it's less than $5950 and you don't have investment income, put exempt. If they say yes, but it's $100 and you will make less than $5850 ($5950 - $100), put exempt. If they say yea, but it's more than $300, put single/0. If your income is more than $5950, put single/0.
Quick Answers
age has nothing to do with it you are single, you can be claimed by someone else, this is your only job, and you have no dependents if you do not anticipate earning as much as $5950 for 2012 you can file the W-4 as 'exempt' and no income taxes will be withheld
tro
you can put exempt but remind your parents they will have to not your income on there tax return when you turn 18 you will need it to be single and zero deductions to avoid paying more at the end of year so you can get a refund

Check single, and write zero on line 5. Fill in your name, address and ss#. Don't worry about the other lines. Good luck on your job.
