How To Fill Up Online Scholarships Form?

Do I have to file a 8917 Tax form if my parents are claiming me as a dependent?

  • So I'm finishing up my 1040 form, and on line 34, it asks for the tuition and fees deduction. My parents paid about 17,000 in 2009. Do I need to fill out the 8917 form or should my parents? Also, how should I know how much went to the qualified expenses? All the business office gave me was a form with the amount billed and scholarships, and I asked for a more detailed summary of my account, but all it had were the totals in cost (it did have room/board and such) but not how much of the 17k went into each category. Please help! Thank you!

  • Answer:

If you are claimed by your parents, any education deductions/credits would be on their return; not yours. The Education Deduction maxes out a $4000 so $17k is more than enough. However, if their income is too high, they may not get it. Give the 1098t to your parents.
