-
I have a question about social security numbers, when I was filling out my paper work at my job the hr rep was looking at my paper work and she said so your from new jersey? I told her yea I was born there but I wondered how she knew cuz my address is in new york and my hs was in new york too and my previous jobs were in new york too I work in new jersey but live in new york and the only thing I can figure out is she knew by my ss number, I guess I could research on my own but asking people there social security number is kind of bad manners right??

The first three digits are sort of assigned by state, but it is not that simple. Originally, they were assigned based on the location of the Social Security Office where the number was assigned. Later, they decided to assign all the numbers at the national headquarters, instead of at local offices, and started assigning them based on the person's address. Also, the numbering is not consecutive, so it is not usually obvious unless a person memorized each of the almost 1000 possible combinations of first three digits. More likely, you happen to have the same first digits and she or her husband or her children.
