What is an ein number?

I want to e-file my 2007 Tax return but my former employer refuses to give me his ein number. What can I do?

If you've contacted the IRS and filed a missing W-2 complaint and the employer still has not provided you with a copy of your Form W-2 then you have little option but to use the substitute documentation and file a paper return. Sorry. In theory at least you could send them a Form W-9 requesting their EIN. However if they won't send you a W-2 then there's little chance that they'll return that to you. It would be a pyrric victory if they did, however, as without the W-2 in hand, you MUST go with the alternate documentation and file by mail. That puts the IRS on notice that the employer failed to provide a W-2 and will lessen the hassle for you if there's a mismatch in information if they ever do file one.

They are (were) required to give or send you a W-2 approximately 2 months ago. Look at it. It should have the EIN somewhere.
