How much should I expect on my Tax return?

Roughly how much should I expect back from my re-enlistment bonus on my tax return?

  • I re-enlisted for $60,000 in 2009. $46,000 was remaining after taxes. I am married. I do not receive BHA. I am an E-4 in the Marine Corps. How much will I get back for tax return? Thanks. God Bless.

  • Answer:

No way to say. It looks as if not enough tax was withheld from it though, since 25% should have been withheld for Federal income tax alone, plus FICA taxes and any state income tax. That would have left you with LESS than $46,000 net. Your tax liability will be based upon your entire taxable income for the year, not just the bonus. Any refund will depend upon your having paid in more than what your liability is. From the looks of things, there's a good chance that you may owe when you file.
