A tax professional vs Tax Software?

In your opinion, is using a tax software, such as Turbo Tax, as good as going to a professional tax preparer?

  • Answer:

In my opinion, if your taxes are relatively simple, Turbo Tax is as good or better because it's thorough and is cheaper than a tax preparer. In addition, it has a very easy to follow format (Q&A's, no forms to fill out) and makes many suggestions for deductions. It also does a "reality check" to advise you if your numbers are somehow out of whack and would be subject to audit by the IRS.

Absolutely, even better sometimes.

For the 90% of taxpayers that don't have any complex tax issues, claim the standard deductions, etc., I think the software is superior to most professional tax preparers, especially those that seem to spring to life around tax time. Most of these tax preparers, many who have worked there less than 90 days and will be laid off right after tax time, I wouldn't trust with my return. Do your own, it's not hard, you will learn something along the way, and will gain some new insight into your own personal finances.
