How do i do taxes online for free?

How can I file my taxes for free online?

  • IRS E-file says I make too much to file with them, any suggestions?

    I heard taxact.com lets you do taxes there and only charges the efile fee. Also have heard bad things about h&r block, who I WAS going to have do mine, now thinking of turbotax or the taxact website

I have used taxact.com for several years. It is very easy to use and it saves all of your information so you can refer back to a previous year if you need to. It costs 15.95 to file both federal and state taxes. You can download the program or do it all over the web.

taxact.com has a free program. It won't ask you all the in depth questions about whether you started school this year or if you gave to a charity, but for just basic stuff, it'll do state and federal for free and it's very easy. They also e-file for free! Amazing. Also, go to irs.gov and look for the federal tax info on their website. They give a list of websites where you can do your taxes online. I've always used taxact though.

Then you won't be able to e-file without using some kind of service. I am a tax pro so don't advocate these, but some of the tax softwares include on free efiling with the package. If you look on-line there are even a few of those that are free too, but then you will usually pay for the e-filing, and you will need a credit card to do so. If the up front cost is the problem, and you expect a refund, many tax pros can do you taxes and file them with their fees coming direct to them from your refund.
