What is included in a car service?

How much should a major service cost for a Renault Clio (2008, not a sport version)?

  • My 'Service Due' reminder popped up on my computer at 75000miles. I have contacted Renault and they explained that my car is now due a major service at a cost of just over £500. I would like to know a) if this sounds about right in terms of cost, b) what is included in a major service, and c) whether or not I can get a major service done at another garage when my car is part of a Renault finance scheme without breaching my finance agreement - I know the Block Exemption came into force in 2003 but don't know if this still applies when I have a finance contract - the person at Renault said I have to get my car serviced as per the terms and agreement of my finance contract (which doesn't end until July), which does mention it having to be in line with Renault servicing guidelines. I'm really confused! Rather irritatingly I no longer have my service book...the local Renault dealership said they put it back in the car on the passenger seat after the last service but when I collected the car it wasn't there! If anyone is able to answer all/any of my questions I would be very happy! Thank you.

  • Answer:

Dont know what engine you have in it, if its the 1.4 or 1.6 thats a 5hr job for a cambelt, one things for sure you wont get that lot done for £500, your looking at £1000 for a servce and cambelt kit, waterpump etc, as for your service book, tell them to find it or replace it with all services and miles that were shown, good luck

Even with the finance scheme you can go anywhere for servicing. If this is a service including a cam belt change, brake fluid change and coolant change then £500 is typical at a dealer. Main dealer prices are a lot more than independents and no one includes all the possible things that might be found that need to be done, for example brake pads and disc will not be included and might need changing.. Finance agreements have nothing to do with servicing.

To answer your question ,you are stumped for you have not got your service book ,you will need to go back to the garage were you had your car serviced last and see if they can let you have a record of the services that your car has up to date ,without your service book you have no proof at all . A cost for a major with a new timing belt is anything up to £800.
