Q's about cars, Peugeot: What does Engine Size: 1,998 cc mean? 1.9 engine size?

  • Is a peugeot 306 too big for a 1st car? Whats the engine size and will this be an expensive car to insure? Thanks

  • Answer:

I'm sure the manufacturer would refer to that engine as a two liter.

A peugeot 306 1.9 non turbo diesel is insurance group 4 and is cheap to insure. A 306 1.9 turbo diesel ( 1905 cc)is insurance group 5 insurance is a bit more pricey as these cars shift especially the pre 1998- 2000 models. The 306 2.0 Hdi (1997cc) are also reasonably cheap group 5 insurance. Average insurance costs: Male £ 1500 per year. female £ 1200 per year to insure. If you want a cheap car to insure go for a lower insurance group say a ford Ka 1.3 group 3/4 depending on the model. I gave bought my son a 306 td 1999 v plate car, he wrote it off 3 days later by hitting a tree due to showing off the performance / power the car had.

1998cc is equivelant to 2.0l engine. If you are buying a petrol car you probably want something up to 1.5l. If you are looking at a diesel, anything up to 2.0l should be ok. However, insurance quotes are generally based on the power output of the engine, which does not always corresspond with the engine size and they also use statistics on how many people that own the same car have had an accident. The best way to find a cheap car to insure is to use the online quoting

It's the cubic capacity of the engine ie the total capacity volume of the cylinders which is the size of the bore and the stroke. Most people and Insurance Companies would just call that a 2 litre car. Regards the Insurance that entirely depends on your age, how long you have been driving and when you passed your test. Coupled with any driving convictions and any No Claims Bonuses you may have. Also the make and model plays a great part in it as well. If your very young turbo assisted chargers on engines are a definite no no!

Yup, it is classed as a 2.0l by insurance companies. Although as stated above, the exact premium would depend on age etc, bear in mind that this is the largest engine in a 306 and is a performance variant thus increasing the insurance premiums and all other running costs. If this is your first car I suggest you start with a smaller engine, we all did! Hope this helps.

1,998cc means cubic capacity which is the size of the engine, 1.9 means it has a 1.9 litre engine but a 306 is a good first car

Getting a bit off topic, but with reference to the previous answer, a non turbo diesel is NOT dangerously slow. It drives like it is meant to drive. They are good for driving in a normal manner, what they cannot do is turn into a race car by using higher revs. They have plenty of torque (which is what you use to drive normally) but they do not have the high power at high rpm. They are not as good for overtaking other vehicles since this requires quick acceleration. I was amused last summer to find that I was following behind a Nissan Skyline on a 50 km stretch of windy country road pretty much the whole way. They were able to accelerate faster on the straights and pass easier, but I easily kept up the whole way, a lot of which was 2nd or 3rd gear in my non-turbo 1.9 Peugeot 405 diesel wagon....

Pugger!

I recently had a 206 1.6i (110 bhp) which was very fast. Cost me 1,000 to insure as my first car (age 19) no years claims. Don't get a Diesel if it's not turbo charged. It will be dangerously slow. Peugeots 1.9 engines are pathetic compared to their later 2.0 HDI engines with the turbo. One year later and the cost for me to have a 206 2.0 TD is 1,000. However this is for insurance in manchester. In response to Pugger. The 1.9 D i was in was very slow (think 0-60 in 16 seconds as its starts) and to be honest. That type of acceleration is dangerous. And when that time comes and you need to move...Still though; you are correct, it drives like its meant to.
