  • Answer:

Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. In North America, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

It's just another day for us men to fork out a bunch of money for the lady that we love. Between flowers, dinner, and maybe another gift, it's easily $200 or more. In return, we get a card.

Lovers, loved ones and classmates exchange gifts such as candy and flowers each winter in the name of Valentine, a saint in whose honor we celebrate a holiday on Feb. 14. Although the history of Valentine’s Day and its patron saint might be shrouded in mystery, we do know that the month equates with romance. One legend contends that St. Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for his crop of potential soldiers. Viewing the decree as unjust, Valentine defied Claudius and continued to perform secret marriages for young lovers. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Another legend suggests that Valentine actually sent the first Valentine’s Day greeting card himself. While in prison, he supposedly fell in love with a young girl who might have been his jailer’s daughter. She visited him during his confinement, and before his death, which occurred on Feb. 14, circa 207, he allegedly wrote her a letter signed "from your Valentine" — an expression still used today. True or not, the stories emphasize Valentine’s appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and, most important, romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, he was among the most popular saints in England and France; today, tokens of affection range from candy hearts and chocolates to diamonds and Dom Perignon.
