What does it mean to be someone's valentine?

Is it possible to be a "valentine" just on Valentine's Day or must there be a committed relationship? What is expected of someone who is someone's valentine? What in the world does "valentine" mean?
Answer:

It all depends on the person, most typically your lover who wants a realtionship. Rarely is it just can i flirt and be like a relationship for a day. Being a girl i just give little chocolates to all my friends and get some candy/cards in return. Some take it seriously and by huge things for people they love the most. But yeah unless the person is on the same page for just a friends with benefits for a day with holding hands then it's probably what i said at the beginning if not just holding hands and being cutsy for one day, not a whole relationship.
