Is this Valentine's Day again?

What significance has St. Valentines Day for you?

  • Do you know where St. Valentines Day originates from and what it's real meaning is? Do all of you do anything special on that day? I am sounding rather ignorant here I know. When I was younger, 20 maybe and I was still living in Middle Europe, it was not a ''big thing'' then but I certainly saw a lot of guys go and buy flowers and I had no idea why, I just thought.. if the florist makes such a great business every day it's certainly worthwhile to sell flowers.. what's up with all those guys, they can't all have a bad conscience that they have to beg forgiveness by saying it with ''flowers'' LOL...I asked my husband of 20 years if his mom and dad had done something special on Valentines Day and he told me... no, and he is British. My parents definitely never did anything. My husband said he does not know the meaning of St Valentines Day .. nor why people go and buy something..but he said to me ''Whatever you say, you won't get those books I ordered for you before Feb. 14th... '' and I said..''Did we ever give each other gifts on Valentines Day'' and he replied ''Didn't we go to Paris once on Valentines Day..."Never'' I told him.. we went on our 10th wedding anniversary when we lived in the Netherlands.. we went for a long weekend''.. No, we just give cards to each other.. I don't think we ever did anything else.. what do other people do.. the younger generation. Us oldies aged 46 and 50.. we don't really know or maybe it's just my husband and I. I know definitely that in Middle Europe the younger generation does something on Valentines day.. Please enlighten me. LOL . Thanks

Hi Vera, My husband always surprises me on Valentines day. I will get him dark chocolate, which is his favorite in a mystery gift. He never knows what's going to pop up. My husband will get me roses, 6 red and 6 white. White, because I love white roses. After all the gift giving, we have a nice valentine dinner, which includes a valentine souffle. I have included a link explaining the origin of St. Valentine for you. www.history.com/minisites/valentine Take care, Alexis M.

In Ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor Juno, Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Feast of Lupercalia started the next day. During these times boys and girls were segregated. However, the young people had a custom that began on the eve of the Festival of Lupercalia. The girl’s names were written on pieces of paper and inserted into jars. Each boy then drew a girl’s name from the jar and they were partners throughout the Festival. After being paired, the children would often continue to see each other throughout the year and on occasion even fell in love and got married. My husband and me had more fun on Valentine's Day before marriage than after marriage. Remind you, the kids are always between us, rocking our boring Worlds, thank goodness !!!
