What do they mean by be my valentine?

Valentines day there are always candy or cards and all with little wuotes like "Be Mine", or "Be My Valentine" ..they all sound adorable but I don't understand..what is being someones valentine supposed to mean and all? Soo what's the meanaing of valentine? what is it/person supposed to be or do?
